Fending off attackers: How to defend yourself from an attack in public

Let's say you're in a bar or club or even walking down the street and you get confronted by an aggressive individual. What do you do?

If you're in bar and you're holding a drink, just throw it at them and remove yourself as quickly as possible.

If, however, you're confronted on the street, set yourself up so you're in the best position to defend yourself if you have to.

Lift your hands to eye level. Also, position your body so your lead leg is in front. This stance doesn't only provide you with good balance, but it also gives you a sense of confidence, you feel the part, so you're ready for anything.

Obviously, the aim is to diffuse the situation and retreat. However, if you find yourself in a position where retreating is not option, consider the following:

  • Always keep your hands up

  • Should the individual attempt to strike you, block it - like this.

  • If you have no other choice but to hit back, punch them in the nose - this will make their eyes water, giving you the opportunity to run.

I hope you never have to use this, but if there comes a time, just remember to keep your hands up.
